Andropause
Some references have begun referring to hormones difficulties for men as ‘andropause’, a word somewhat like ‘menopause’. While there may be similarities between the hormone changes in men and women, I do not choose to make the comparison to strongly. Women clearly undergo significant changes in their hormones and functions as they age. This change is called menopause and there is a large body of work on the subject.
The idea of a male menopause - or andropause - has some support. Unlike women, men have not been subjected to the same dramatic changes - and men do not experience a decline in their overall ability to reproduce. What seems to happen is that men’s hormones become imbalanced over time. And this imbalance can have negative impact on a man’s health - of feeling of wellness. The imbalances can be corrected and wellness can be obtained.
Many men find themselves in a position where they are not happy with their health. We find that the problems are often able to be resolved by making changes in diet and activity and by doing things to adjust hormone levels that have become imbalanced.
We have experience in helping men achieve balance - and the wellness that comes from it. There is evidence that many diseases we encounter as we age have some connection with our hormone status. If you’ve become a ‘couch potato’ or a ‘clicker king’ you might benefit by checking out your hormones and finding ways to get things into a better state. You might find that energetic ‘you’ that is hidden by hormone imbalances.
High blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, diabetes and prostate problems are often treated adequately by using prescription drugs. Some people claim that by re-establishing hormone balance, altering diet and doing minimal amounts of exercise can help alleviate diseases and conditions often treated with drugs. If you’d like to investigate the benefits of alternative approaches to your health you might want to consider a consultation with one of our pharmacists.
